Hero of Sparta – Epic, dontcha think?
One of the biggest things out there on the net right now is iPhone applications. Specifically, the games. And of the games, Hero of Sparta is king.
There is a plot to the game, something about you, Argos, being the aforementioned hero of Sparta, running around, attempting to get to Hades for some reason, but that’s not really important. As in pretty much any game on the iPhone, the focus is on 3 things – gameplay, graphic, and fun. And Hero succeeds rather well on all counts. As you can see in the screenshot, the graphics are spectacular, easily the nicest on the platform that I’ve seen by a significant margin.
Next, gameplay. The gameplay is fairly simple. You have a virtual joystick, which is just as responsive as any I’ve used on a console — and definitely beats most phones 4 way D-pad — so moving around to get to people to attack is easy. And attacking is simple; you have an attack button, and a defend button: you press them a lot, usually in different combinations and variations of holding down the attack button. As you do this, Argos is pirouetting around the screen, smashing his battle axe, sword, or scimitars with unbelievable power, and just sheer awesomeness.
As you get used to the battle system, and learn specific combos, you are able to wreck havoc as you please. And its fun. Really fun. Even more fun is the space clearing specials you can use, called Ascensions, which, depending on the weapon, has effects such as releasing a storm of arrows on the nearby enemies, or hurling a battle axe through them. Larger enemies have “focus kills” which means that after you do enough damage, you have the option to attack with a button sequence that yield more heath, experience and energy. Those who oppose such button sequences can just finish the battle the old fashioned way, which I feel is a fair solution.
The game’s length is also good, and a heroic difficulty level, unlocked after your first run, is the real fun of the game: you start off with all your previous weapon upgrades, and have enemies that actually can kill you.
My only complaint about the game, aside from its lower end difficulty, is price–a solid, but could-be-cheaper $10. However, despite that, the game is worth it.
So, in total, Hero of Sparta is a fun, cool, and frankly awesome game for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Those looking for a good adventure or a fun fighter will not be disappointed.
