Having trouble focusing on your work? Try Think, an application made for Apple OS X by Freeverse, which works essentially as a productivity helper. By selecting a certain application that you wish to focus on, the program blacks out the rest of the screen and other distracting applications currently running, preventing disturbances from all the potential distractors in our digital world. I am in the midst of finals and this application has proven a blessing; I can study my notes uninterrupted, IM, email and the rest all out of eye and ear. While some may work better with distractions, for the ones less fortunate who find them a hinderance, I highly suggest Think, available for free here.
