WWDC – iPhone 3G June 10, 2008

Monday Apple announced the highly speculated and anticipated 3G iPhone, which is along with other innovations, able to run at the much faster 3G internet speeds from AT&T, as well as having GPS built in. The new iPhone will also be running the new iPhone/iPod Touch 2.0 software (more on that to come), which includes the new App Store and Microsoft Exchange support for businesses.
One of the biggest complaints about the original iPhone was the immense price tag that accompanied it. Apples’s iPhone has rectified this, selling 8GB for $200 and 16GB for $300, making it a reasonably affordable phone for the average person. Also in the redesign is:
1) a glossy back case–black on the 8GB, or black or white on the 16
2) slightly thicker body than the original
3) non-recessed headphone port–another main criticism of the original iPhone (That means that it can use any kind of headphones without using a special adapter)
The iPhone 3G will be available on July 11, presumably launching alongside the 2.0 software as well.

Just a correction, the iPhone 3g is not thicker than the old one. In fact it is slightly thinner.
It is actually thinner on the edges and weighs less (which is why it looks thinner) but overall it is actually a drop thicker. This most likely is because of GPS and 3G add-ons, and in the end it probably wont be too noticeable in one’s pocket anyway. Check it out with comparisons to other phones (including original iPhone) here: http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/sizing-it-up-3g-iphone-vs-the-rest/ Good point though.
